Podiatry is the study of the lower limb and foot. Podiatrist specialise in the treatment of injuries, pathology and problems that can affect the legs and feet. Your podiatrists are qualified allied health professionals who have completed a Bachelor of Applied Science Podiatry at university, and are closely governed by APRHA. Podiatrists use multiple diagnostic and treatment techniques such as Xray, Ultrasound and MRI referrals, Minor Surgeries for Ingrown toenails, injection techniques, custom orthotic prescriction and manufacture, blood flow testing, as well as porviding general foot care and management of patients with Diabetes.
Orthotics
At Woolooware Podiatry we use a variety of off the shelf and custom made orthoses to treat many foot and lower leg conditions. We use 3D scanning technology to capture a perfect image of the foot and use the latest techniques that ensure the orthoses are comfortable and supportive. We use rigid polypropylene (plastic), and soft EVA (foam) orthoses depending on the patients individual requirements and prescription.
Ingrown Toenail Surgery
Ingrown toenails can be painful and often very debilitating. They most commonly occur on the big toes (hallux nails) and can become red, swollen and infected if left untreated. Common Causes: -Damage or injury to the nail -Incorrectly cutting technique -Curved nail shape Where possible, conservative treatment is always our first choice- removing the problematic nail edge, allowing it to grow out, and giving advice regarding cutting technique. In many cases this is all that is required to alleviate pain. However, if the ingrown toe nail continues to be problematic and painful, Partial Nail Avulsion Surgery(PNA) is often the most cost effective and most comfortable long term solution. PNA surgery is a relatively minor procedure, conducted in our clinic rooms, and involves the permanent removal of the part of the nail that is causing your pain. It is conducted under local anaesthetic and is almost painless, with next to no down time.
